Matt’s mother decides to take in a foreign exchange student from Sicily (the little island that the Italian boot is kicking); his name is Sonny and he’s 16. I awake to the screech of my alarm clock. I reach back and hit it off. I move into a sitting position; Sonny looks up at me and I ruffle his hair. He yawns. Smiling, I pull him into a hug.
I kiss his cheek, “Morning, Sonny.”
I laugh at him. What kind of response is that?
“You ready for school?”
“No,” He yawns again, “I want to stay in bed with you.”
“Yeah, I’d like that, too,” I kiss his lips gently. “Sonny, you know we have to keep our relationship secret, right?”
“Because if mom found out, she’d be pissed. If somebody at school found out, it’d get back to her…”
“Ok…I tell no one.”
I stand up, pulling him to his feet as well. He stands on his tiptoes and kisses me. I wrap my arms around him and kiss him back, but I break the kiss before we get too into it.
“Yes, cutie; now go get ready.”
“You have to let me go first,” He smiles. Reluctantly, I let go.
I watch him scamper off to get ready. Already, ironically, I’m worried about him.
Evan had been cursing himself ever since Sonny got there. He’d figured he’d get back at Big Brother by sticking him with the exchange student. He planned on the exchange student being some obese weirdo that had no concept of personal space. Instead, he was gorgeous and sweet and humorous and…
And Evan had a thing for him. He didn’t get to spend much time alone with Sonny—Matt was always hogging him—but when he did, Sonny was always cute, playful, and sincere. Evan wanted desperately to kiss him, but he was afraid to scare Sonny off.
Part of him was glad that Matt had warmed up to Sonny; the other part was jealous, as if frightened Matt would take Sonny away. But Evan didn’t think he’d have to worry about the latter; Matt had never shown an interest in men before…
With school starting, Evan figured he’d be able to spend more alone time with Sonny; after all, they have the same classes and Sonny would need a study buddy.
Pushing these thoughts aside, Evan heads to the kitchen, where Matt, Sonny and mom already are. Matt already decided to forget what his mother so kindly told him yesterday; he would act like it didn’t faze him, like he’s over it.
“Morning,” Evan mumbles.
“Hello!” Sonny beams. Evan smiles back and takes a seat beside him.
“Oh, isn’t that cute?” Their mother says, “You two have Sonny in the middle! I knew you boys would get along!”
Sonny puts an arm around each of them and grins, “Yes.” Both Matt and Evan smile at the irony.
After breakfast and after everyone got their school supplies ready to go, Matt cautiously asks, “Hey, Mom, can I take the car to school?”
“Ah, come on, why not?”
“That’s why there’s a bus, Matt.”
“Goddamn it.” Matt turns to Sonny and Evan, “C’mon lets be nerds and wait for the loser bus to take us to fairy island.” He prances in a small circle around them.
“Oh, get outside!” their mother shoos them out.
“Now what?” Sonny asks, looking from Matt to Evan.
“We wait,” Evan says, “Look, Sonny, I’ll show you around school. We have the same classes, so you just follow me, ok?”
“And don’t get into shit,” Matt warns.
“No. No getting into shit.”
Sonny looks confused. Evan stares at Matt, “Sometimes I swear you’re retarded.”
“Fuck off,” Matt hits Evan upside the head as the bus comes into view.
“Oh, yay, the loser bus!” Matt waves his hands in mock excitement. Sonny mimics him, still confused.
Evan laughs and gently hits Sonny’s hands, “He’s just being retarded.”
The bus stops and Evan climbs on followed by Sonny then Matt. Evan sits down and Sonny sits next to him. Matt sits across the aisle. Sonny looks at him and pats the seat next to him.
“No room, Sonny, and besides that’s kinda gay…” Matt tells him.
“Oh,” Sonny says feeling guilty for excluding Matt. Evan starts talking about their classes, ignoring his brother completely. Matt puts on his headphones, mildly pissed that Evan is hogging Sonny. Oh well, Matt would always have private time with him at night.
Sonny liked that Evan was always friendly with him. He was glad Evan’s in all of his classes or he’d probably get lost. When they get to the school, Sonny eyes grow wide. It is huge, just like everything else in this country.
“That is big,” he whispers to Evan.
“Just stick by me, ok?”
“Yes.” Sonny grabs on to Evan’s courier bag and follows him inside the building.
Since it’s the first day of school there was an assembly that to go over the rules in the student handbook. Sonny got confused. The man was speaking way too fast in words that Sonny wasn’t sure he completely understood. The man also spoke with an accent, which made it even harder for him to understand.
He stares at Evan with a puzzled look, “I do not understand,” He whispers.
“Don’t worry about it; it’s not important.”
“They do it only so they can say they told us.”
“He’s just saying what the school rules are, but most of the time nobody really cares, unless you do something really serious.”
“Ok,” Sonny replies with a yawn. He leans his head on Evan’s shoulders and is soon asleep for the rest of the assembly. Evan smiles.
After the assembly, they went back to homeroom. Their teacher introduces the new students to the class. Then she introduces the exchange student.
“Come up to the front of the class and tell us about yourself, where you’re from and what you think of America so far.”
“Ok,” Sonny mutters as he walks to the front of the class. “My name is Sonny Moore and I am from Palermo, Sicily…”
“You’re hot!” A girl yells from the back of the class. The rest of the students burst into laughter.
The teacher glares at the class. “Continue, Sonny.”
“I am from a small town. I like the guitar and to sing. I think America is big and rich; I like it but it is also…very…closed…" he makes small circles with his hands as he tries to think of the word he wants,"...very…restrain…”
“What do you mean ‘closed and ‘restrained?’ the teacher prompts.
“Like ‘freedom’ in word only. Very religion based. Not a bad thing, just not what I expect.”
“So what’s Sicily like?”
“Compare to America, Sicily is poor. But we are more open to difference and we honor the dead in festivals and things. Death is very a part of Sicilian culture.”
The teacher nods and gestures for him to take his seat. Already he had girls taking interest in him; it made Evan a bit jealous.
Evan decides he better stake his claim before one of the girls tries to. “Hey, Sonny,” he whispers, “Let’s you and me hang out together after school, ok?”
“Yes!” Sonny smiles.
Evan is happy. ‘Tonight, I’ll make my move…’ he thinks.
